Old School Beats

There's nothing like a Sunday afternoon musical adventure through my head. The music on my MySpace player has been transformed into "Old School Christian Hip-Hop and Dance." Here's a rundown of the new playlist . . .

1. Freedom of Soul -- Freedom of Soul
"Feed Your Mind With The Freedom of Soul"
CD-Caught In A Land of Time/1991
Notice the sample at the beginning of the record. Yes, that originally was McFadden and Whitehead from the 70s. But one of my other favorite Christian rap acts, S.F.C. (Soldiers For Christ), sampled it in the late 80s. FOS used that sample to start the song.
I remember vividly listening to this song in my Walkman outside after school at Putnam City Central Junior High in 8th grade. I was the kid who loved Christian Rock and Hip-Hop (No wonder, everyone thought I was a geek!).
I only had this on cassette until recently when I found the CD online from a store in Indiana that sold rare CDs.

2. Gospel Gangstaz -- Mobbin'
"Let Me Start With My Intro, A Gang Brother From South Central"
CD-Gang Affiliated/1995
My best friend Jerome Alexander and I loved this song. Before my old cell phone quit working, this was his ringtone when he called me. Much later, I interviewed the Gangstaz at 91 FM. They would always answer my question and follow it with about two dozen shout outs. They were a crazy bunch of guys.

3. Prodigal Sons -- Power of God
"The Power of God!"
CD-Texno Tehology/1993
I listened to this tape all of the time when I was a sophomore at Bethany High School. I remember listening to my Walkman on the bus on the way to play football. Everybody thought I was weird, but this was the coolest techno ever.

4. Dynamic Twins -- Get Up, Get Down
"Give Me A Fat Kiss"
CD-No Room 2 Breathe/1993
All right, flash back to high school and I'm driving down 50th Street to Bethany Stadium for football practice in my 1986 Nissan Stanza. This is what is playing in my tape player.

5. ETW -- ETW
"I remember, we didn't have cable."
CD-ETW/1989
ETW stood for "End Time Warriors." When I first started listening to 91 FM, this song played all of the time. Of course, I went to Mardel and bought the tape. These guys were from Tulsa.

6. Tim Miner -- Make It Rain
"I Can Make It Rain!"
CD-True Story/1990 and Tim Miner/1992
Along with Jon Gibson, Oklahoma native Tim Miner was one of my favorite R&B artists. 91 FM played Tim a lot.

Prayer/Help Needed

I mentioned this on Star 102 this morning, but I wanted to share it with my MySpace friends.
--
FROM: Bridget Simpson
I just wanted to let everyone know that we will be having a prayer Service for Jennifer Ireland. If you do not know her story, go to her website at www.jenniferireland.blogs.com. She is a young mother nearing the end of her fight with cancer. Jennifer is a beautiful and courageous woman who could teach us all what it means to live. We will be meeting at the First Baptist Church Of Blue Springs Sunday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m. The church is located at 15th and Main in Blue Springs. Please bring a candle. We are trying to get as many people as possible praying for Jen at the same time. If you are unable to make it to the church PLEASE try to remember to say a prayer for Jen Sunday at 7:15. Please re-post this and tell everyone that you know. Jennifer needs a miracle.
--
In Oklahoma City, Kari Moroz is fighting cancer as well. I went to junior high with Kari. She is fighting a tough battle and needs your help with medical expenses. You can find out more
here.
Please lift both of these women and their families up in prayer.

Thanks!

Joel

Happy New Year

New Year's Day
by Carolyn Arends

I buy a lot of diaries
Fill them full of good intentions
Each and every New Year's Eve
I make myself a list
All the things I'm gonna change
Until January 2nd
So this time I'm making one promise

Chorus:
This will be my resolution
Every day is New Year's Day
This will be my resolution
Every day is New Year's Day

I believe it's possible
I believe in new beginnings
'Cause I believe in Christmas Day
And Easter morning too
And I'm convinced it's doable
'Cause I believe in second chances
Just the way that I believe in you

This will be my resolution
Every day is New Year's Day
This could start a revolution
Every day is...

One more chance to start all over
One more chance to change and grow
One more chance to grab a hold of grace
And never let it go

World Series Error/Conspiracy

Some notes from the first two games of the Fall Classic (while wishing I had a DVR)

1. Anyone notice the quick Fox promo (I only saw it during Game 1) promoting American Idol where the contestants sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame?" At the beginning they showed a graphic that looked like a scorecard. At the top it said Mets vs. Tigers.

Oops.

I guess the Fox people weren't expecting the Game 7 win by the Cards in the NLCS.

Making promos on the radio, I've been bitten before by the "didn't doublecheck" bug. It's not fun.

2. I think the Kenny Rogers substance on hand incident seems a little fishy. Between Tigers manager Jim Leyland, Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa, Rogers himself and umpire supervisor Steve Palermo, no one can seem to get their story straight.

"Tony (LaRussa) said a couple of hitters complained the ball was doing some funny things," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said during an in-game TV interview from the dugout on Fox Sports. "Evidently, Tony brought it to their attention, but obviously it wasn't anything."

After the game, LaRussa tersely told reporters he would not discuss the matter.

Palermo said, " Alfonso Marquez, the home-plate umpire, asked him to remove the dirt so there wouldn't be any question about any controversy."

Rogers denied that his meeting with the umpires had anything to do with the substance on his hand.

Four different people and four slightly different stories of what happened.

However, it seems the both Fox and ESPN are just dying to see controversy. They were almost in tears that Rogers was not ejected and suspended. It was hilarious to see Palermo remind reporters that dirt is not a foreign substance.

"That's the playing surface," he told reporters after the game.

UCO Wins Because Joel and Jen Attend

Jennifer and I went to Oklahoma City (plus suburbs Edmond and Midwest City) to visit the family over the weekend and watch UCO beat Northwestern 31-26 (Game Story).
By the way, if anyone ever refers to Oklahoma City as Oak City, you will know right away that they have never been there. Oklahoma City's only nickname is OKC.
Here's some photos from before the game.

After the game, we walked around campus. I got a copy of The Vista. I was the sports editor for that newspaper back in college.

The college radio station (KUCO-FM 99.9) flipped from Alternative as Z99 to top-40 as Z-100. That's really cool. I wasn't on KUCO very much. I never was a broadcasting major (surprise!) and I was working at 91 FM when I did take some radio classes.

After the game, we went to Braum's for some ice cream. The closest Braum's to KC is in Emporia, KS (about 100 miles from where we live).
Braum's makes everything better.

Flat Tire

So, I had a flat tire Saturday morning. Just as I turned off Mission Road to go to work, BAM! My car was shaking. It made me 50 minutes late getting on the air (stupid lugnuts!) and it tried to ruin my weekend.
Anyone who's been on the air knows that being late throws you off for the rest of your show. That was me on Saturday.
Here are some pics of the fun.

Look at the size of the gash in my tire!

Hymn

Oh refuge of my hardened heart
Oh fast pursuing lover come
As angels dance around Your throne
My life by captured fare You own

Not silhouette of trodden faith
Nor death shall not my step be guide
I'll pirouette upon my grave
For in Your path I'll run and hide

Chorus:
Oh gaze of love so melt my pride
That I may in Your house but kneel
And in my brokenness to cry
Spring worship unto Thee

When beauty breaks the spell of pain
The bludgeoned heart shall burst in vain
But not when love be pointed king
And truth shall Thee forever reign

Chorus:
Oh gaze of love so melt my pride
That I may in Your house but kneel
And in my brokenness to cry
Spring worship unto Thee

Sweet Jesus carry me away
Form cold of night and dust of day
In ragged hour or salt worn eye
Be my desire, my well spring lye

Chorus:
Oh gaze of love so melt my pride
That I may in Your house but kneel
And in my brokenness to cry
Spring worship unto Thee

Spring worship unto Thee
Spring worship unto Thee

-- Jars of Clay

The Last Night At The K

I went with my wife Jen and Jen Driskill of the mighty Mix 93.3 to see the Royals and Tigers tonight (09.23). The Royals' last home game is tomorrow afternoon, so it was my last game of 2006 at Kauffman Stadium.
It wasn't pretty. The Tigers scored 10 in the first inning and won 15-4.
Jen D and Jen R had their picture taken with Sluggerr.

After the game, we got a fireworks display.
