There's nothing like a Sunday afternoon musical adventure through my head. The music on my MySpace player has been transformed into "Old School Christian Hip-Hop and Dance." Here's a rundown of the new playlist . . .
1. Freedom of Soul -- Freedom of Soul
"Feed Your Mind With The Freedom of Soul"
CD-Caught In A Land of Time/1991
Notice the sample at the beginning of the record. Yes, that originally was McFadden and Whitehead from the 70s. But one of my other favorite Christian rap acts, S.F.C. (Soldiers For Christ), sampled it in the late 80s. FOS used that sample to start the song.
I remember vividly listening to this song in my Walkman outside after school at Putnam City Central Junior High in 8th grade. I was the kid who loved Christian Rock and Hip-Hop (No wonder, everyone thought I was a geek!).
I only had this on cassette until recently when I found the CD online from a store in Indiana that sold rare CDs.
2. Gospel Gangstaz -- Mobbin'
"Let Me Start With My Intro, A Gang Brother From South Central"
CD-Gang Affiliated/1995
My best friend Jerome Alexander and I loved this song. Before my old cell phone quit working, this was his ringtone when he called me. Much later, I interviewed the Gangstaz at 91 FM. They would always answer my question and follow it with about two dozen shout outs. They were a crazy bunch of guys.
3. Prodigal Sons -- Power of God
"The Power of God!"
CD-Texno Tehology/1993
I listened to this tape all of the time when I was a sophomore at Bethany High School. I remember listening to my Walkman on the bus on the way to play football. Everybody thought I was weird, but this was the coolest techno ever.
4. Dynamic Twins -- Get Up, Get Down
"Give Me A Fat Kiss"
CD-No Room 2 Breathe/1993
All right, flash back to high school and I'm driving down 50th Street to Bethany Stadium for football practice in my 1986 Nissan Stanza. This is what is playing in my tape player.
5. ETW -- ETW
"I remember, we didn't have cable."
CD-ETW/1989
ETW stood for "End Time Warriors." When I first started listening to 91 FM, this song played all of the time. Of course, I went to Mardel and bought the tape. These guys were from Tulsa.
6. Tim Miner -- Make It Rain
"I Can Make It Rain!"
CD-True Story/1990 and Tim Miner/1992
Along with Jon Gibson, Oklahoma native Tim Miner was one of my favorite R&B artists. 91 FM played Tim a lot.
